Mandate

The Directorate of Standards and Compliance was set up at the Ministry of Trade and Industry to formulate and harmonize policies for the National Quality Infrastructure (NQI) that will ensure collaboration in the implementation of Trade policies both at national and global level. Therefore, the directorate should develop programmes for funding through the Government of Sierra Leone and donor partners on:

Developing programmes and activities for institutional capacity building to meet the challenges of the global market.

Develop standards and quality systems to meet production requirements for local and international markets.

Provide policy and strategic guidance of the NQI to support economic growth.

Ensure that standard institutions in Sierra Leone are strengthened to become internationally competitive.

Export Facilitation

Ensure that technical as well as Sanitary and Phyto-Sanitary regulations do not constrain the export potentials of Sierra Leone.

Information Provision

Provide timely information on Sanitary and Phyto-Sanitary/Technical Barriers to Trade (SPS/TBT) requirements to exporters to ensure compliance.

Certification & Evaluation

Provide internationally recognized evaluation and certification to ensure effective quality controls.

Standards Conformity

Ensure that domestic and imported goods conform to national health, Phyto-sanitary, safety, environmental and technical standards.

Quality Infrastructure

Establish quality infrastructure to improve local and export trade.

Manufacturer Training

Ensure the training of manufacturers on Sanitary and Phyto-Sanitary/Technical Barriers to Trade (SPS/TBT).
